Fr. Marty Connell, SJ, is the Dean of Arrupe College, Loyola University Chicago’s innovative associates degree program designed to make college affordable for first generation students. He entered the Society of Jesus after graduating from Saint John’s Jesuit in 1981. In addition to the normal studies to prepare him for service as a Jesuit priest, he also received a M.A. from the University of Toronto in medieval studies and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Before embarking on a career in higher education, he served as teacher and administrator at St. Ignatius High School, Cleveland, and the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy. His work in higher education in addition to his present service at Arrupe College has included service as a faculty member at Loyola Marymount University and John Carroll University. He’s also served as a superior of Jesuit communities in Cleveland and Berkeley, California. A highlight of his Jesuit life was his three years of service in Tanzania, where he worked with a team to launch a 1,200 student co-ed Jesuit boarding school.

Karl Ertle joined the St. John's Jesuit community as president on July 1. His prior service in Jesuit education began at his alma mater, St. Ignatius in Cleveland, where he taught, coached, and held various administrative positions including Assistant Principal and Vice President for Ignatian Mission. He then served as President of Cleveland Central Catholic High School for six years before being named President at Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls where he served the last 13 years. Karl holds an M.A. in religious studies from John Carroll and is currently the vice chair of the national Jesuit Friends and Alumni Network (JFAN) board. He has been married to Carol Klein for 37 years and they are the parents of six children, including their youngest, Joe, who is a Jesuit in his fourth year of formation and studying at Fordham.
